Navigating the App
What does this app do?
The biggest problem with dieting is being able to maintain it while eating out at restaurants and going about one’s social life. HowUdish is looking to make it easier to eat out and know what to order so you can minimize temptation while sticking to your dieting goals. We collect information about your current diet and weight goals, then present dishes from restaurants in your area that are conducive to your diet.
What happens when I swipe a dish?
Dishes are presented on the main screen that match your diet selection(s) and fall within your location. Swipe right or click on the green checkmark for dishes that look appealing to you. These will be saved on your account to create an inventory of personally curated dishes to help you find the best dish to satisfy your hunger when you are ready to eat out. You can view all of your right-swiped dishes by clicking on the fork & spoon icon in the lower left corner of the app. Swipe left or click on the red X for dishes that you are not interested in trying. These will be removed from your selection.
How do I save a dish?
As you are swiping through dishes, you can click on a dish to see more nutritional information about that dish and click on the Save Dish button at the bottom to save that dish. You can also save a dish by looking through your swiped dishes and clicking on the Save Dish star.
Where can I find my saved dishes?
Click on the fork & spoon icon in the lower left corner of the app to see all of your swiped and saved dishes.
What is the difference between swiping and saving a dish?
You can swipe an unlimited number of dishes to create your personal dish inventory to search through when you are looking to eat out. Swiped dishes only stay in your account for 24 hours. Saved dishes are limited to 10 dishes that you have chosen to order and stay on your account indefinitely.
Why won’t it let me save any more dishes?
Saved dishes are limited to 10 per user and are used to help narrow down options when you are looking to order out. You can always delete saved dishes if you want to add new ones. You can upgrade to our Premium version to save an unlimited number of dishes.
How do I undo a swipe?
Accidentally swipe that chicken marsala to the right? No worries, just go into your swiped dishes and tap the dish you would like to remove and drag your finger to the left. Click on the trash icon that appears to remove that dish for good.
Can I use filters to narrow down my search criteria?
Yes, you can update your filters by clicking on the filter icon in the upper left of the swipe screen. Here you have the ability to only show restaurants that are currently open, change your search distance and filter by cuisine type.
Can I save a dish that hasn’t been displayed in my swipe options?
Yes, you can search for a specific restaurant or dish by clicking on the search icon in the upper right of the swipe screen. Once you find the dish you are looking for, click Save Dish to add it to your saved dishes.
I saw a dish that really caught my eye, can I find other dishes from that restaurant?
Make sure to save that dish so you can reference it in your account anytime you are planning on eating out. You can also click on the restaurant name and go to the menu tab to see all other dishes from that restaurant that fall within your diet criteria.
How do I change my location?
You can only swipe dishes where you are currently located. You can upgrade to our Premium version to search for restaurants around other addresses.
How do I update my account information?
Click on your profile at the bottom right of the navigation bar. From there, click on the gear icon on the top right to be taken to where you can update your information.
The app is not finding any dishes near me.
Go to your profile page and click on the gear setting in the upper right corner and make sure that the Use My Location toggle is turned on. You can also expand your filters by clicking on the filter icon in the upper left of the swipe screen to increase your search distance or expand your cuisine options.
Can I utilize the app without allowing it to use my location?
If you turn off your location the app won’t be able to find dishes near you but you can still track your weight goals and search restaurant menus to find dishes that fall within your selected diet.
Why should I check-in on the app?
Checking in to a restaurant allows you to rate and review the dishes that you have ordered. This will help us present dishes that most closely match your diet.
I forgot to check-in when I went out to eat, can I still rate my dish?
Yes, you can check-in at a restaurant at any time. Make sure to only check-in at restaurants that you have visited. You will have the option to rate how well a dish matched your diet for dishes that you have saved at restaurants that you have checked-in at.
Can I rate a restaurant that I checked-in at?
We utilize the restaurant star-ratings from Foursquare so make sure to go there to share your restaurant experience.
Can I find out the price of a dish on the app?
To find the most accurate price information for a dish, you can contact the restaurant directly by going to the restaurant page on the app and clicking the phone icon to call the restaurant.
Can I order a dish or make a reservation from the app?
To place an order or make a reservation, you can contact the restaurant directly by going to the restaurant page on the app and clicking the phone icon to call the restaurant.
Diets & Weight Goals
What diets do you support?
We currently have 9 diets to choose from: low calorie, low carb, low fat, balanced, high protein, high fiber, gluten free, vegan and vegetarian.
I don’t follow a specific diet but am looking to maintain a healthy diet, how can I fully utilize the app?
You are in the right place. This app was created for anyone looking to follow a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. Just choose 1-3 of the available diet selections that most closely match your current eating habits. You can always mix and match your diet selections until you find the combination that works best for you. A good place to start is with the Balanced diet selection which contains the proper portion of protein, fat and carbohydrates and consists of various healthy food groups.
How do I change my diet selections?
Just click on your profile picture in the lower right corner of the app and click on My Diets. You can switch your diet selections at any time by double clicking on a diet to select or remove it.
How do I manage my weight goals?
When you create your account, you will enter your current weight and weight goal. You can keep track and update your goals by going to your profile page and clicking on My Weight Goal. Here you can record your weight to hold yourself accountable to tracking towards your goal. It’s best to make it a habit and record your weight daily or weekly. The frequency doesn’t matter as much as the consistency to help reach your goal.
Can I choose multiple diet goals?
We currently have 3 diet goals to choose from: slim down, maintain and bulk up. You can only choose 1 diet goal so make sure to choose the one that most accurately represents what you are trying to achieve. You can always change your diet goals until you find the best dishes for you. Keep in mind that the more diets you select, the less options you’ll have in terms of finding dishes.
What additional features are available with the Premium version?
The Premium version allows you unlimited swipes and saves, access to recipes, the ability to search in different locations, cheat mode, oops to undo swipes, and an ad-free app experience.
How do I upgrade to the Premium version?
In the app, you can upgrade to the Premium version right from the profile page. You can sign up for the monthly subscription for $3.99/month, or save by signing up for the annual subscription for $39.99/year.
What is cheat mode?
Cheat mode is a Premium feature that allows you to expand your search to show the least worst options to cheat on your diet. Activate cheat mode by clicking on the pizza icon in the bottom right of the swipe screen.
How do I cancel my Premium subscription?
You can manage your subscription from your iPhone settings > iTunes & App Store > click on your Apple ID > View Apple ID > Subscriptions.
Will I lose any of my data if I cancel my Premium subscription?
You will lose all of your saved recipes if you downgrade to the free version, but you will not lose any of your swiped or saved dishes.
Data & Security
How can I access HowUdish?
The HowUdish iPhone app is currently available for download in the app store. We will be launching the Android app in 2018.
What types of restaurants do you have listed on the app?
We are trying to compose the most extensive restaurant list in your area. No restaurants are excluded.
How can I get my favorite restaurant or dish added to the app?
If you notice that we are missing your favorite restaurant or dish, click on the gear setting in the upper right of your profile page and click Contact Us. Let us know the restaurant and location so we can get it added for you.
Take pictures of the restaurant’s menu and send them to us to include those dishes in the future. Stay tuned as we streamline the ability to add a restaurant to the app in future updates.
Where do you have restaurants listed?
We currently have restaurants listed all across the United States. Make sure to bring us along when you travel to help stick to your goals. Stay in touch to hear updates about our international expansion.
Where do you find the nutritional information of these dishes?
We cross reference a variety of sources to build our menu and nutritional database to provide you with the most accurate information available. Portion size, ingredients and preparation methods may vary so make sure to check in with the restaurant to ensure that what you are ordering meets your dietary and any allergy restrictions. If you notice something that doesn’t seem right on the app, please let us know.
I noticed some information was inaccurate on the app.
We try to keep all of our restaurant, menu and nutritional data as up to date as possible. If you notice anything that doesn’t look right, please click on the Report Dish and/or Report Restaurant buttons so we can continue to improve the accuracy of our data. We wouldn’t be able to do it without your feedback!
Do I have to create an account?
Yes, you need to create an account to access the app so we can customize and track your diet, weight goals and dishes specifically for you. You can either log in with your email address or with your Facebook account.
If I log in with Facebook, will you post on my Facebook page?
We will absolutely not post on your behalf. Logging in with Facebook is just an easier way to pull in all of your personal data. We are excited when you reach your goal but will leave that to your discretion to post to your friends.
How does HowUdish keep my account information secure?
