Navigating the App

What does this app do?

The biggest problem with maintaining a special diet is being able to continue your way of eating while dining out at restaurants and going about your social life. Very often restaurants, particularly smaller businesses, do not provide the nutrition information that you need to make informed choices. HowUdish fills this information gap, making it easier to eat out and know what to order so you can minimize temptation while sticking to your way of eating. We collect information about your current diet and then present dishes from restaurants in your area that align with your diet.

What happens when I swipe a dish?

Dishes are presented on the main screen that match your diet selection(s) and fall within your location. Swipe right on the dishes that look appealing to you. These will be saved on your account to create an inventory of personally curated dishes to help you find the best dish to satisfy your hunger when you are ready to eat out. You can view all of your right-swiped dishes by clicking on “profile” in the lower right corner of the app and then clicking on “dishes.” Alternatively, click “activity” at the bottom of the screen, and then click “my dishes.” Swipe left on dishes that you are not interested in trying. These will be removed from your selection.

What happens when I swipe a HowUdish user’s picture?

Sometimes instead of a dish, the picture of a fellow HowUdish user will appear as part of the “Dish Together” feature. The upper right corner of the person’s picture will indicate whether the person is interested in friendship or dating. Swipe right if you are interested in dishing with the person. If they have also swiped right on you, they will be added to the chat feature, which you can access by clicking “activity” at the bottom of the screen and then “chat.” This is a great way to form a network of support from people who are also trying to adhere to a certain dietary pattern. You don’t have to go at it alone!

What happens when I swipe an athlete’s picture?

HowUdish has teamed up with world-class athletes to learn the dietary strategies that they use to maintain an optimal body composition and stay at the top of their game. When you swipe right on an athlete’s picture, you will be given the option to upgrade to a Premium subscription which allows you to follow the athlete and see which dishes they choose when they dine out.

How do I save a dish or a recipe?

As you are swiping through dishes, you can click on a dish to see more nutritional information about that dish and click on the “save dish” button at the bottom to save that dish. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is an option to open the recipe for the dish. You can save the recipe by clicking “save recipe” at the bottom of the recipe page.

Where can I find my saved dishes and recipes?

Click on “activity” at the bottom of the app. Clicking “my dishes” at the top of the activity page will retrieve all of the dishes you swiped right on. Clicking the bookmark symbol at the top right corner of the swiped dishes page will change the view to just the dishes that have been saved. To retrieve your saved recipes, click “my recipes” on the activity page and you will be taken to your list of saved recipes. Easy!

What is the difference between swiping and saving a dish?

If you have a Premium subscription, you can swipe an unlimited number of dishes to create your personal dish inventory to search through when you are looking to eat out. Free members have a daily swipe limit but unlimited dishes can go into their personal dish inventory. However, free members are limited to 10 saved dishes. These stay on your account indefinitely.

Why won’t it let me save any more dishes?

Saved dishes are limited to 10 per user and are used to help narrow down options when you are looking to order out. You can always delete saved dishes if you want to add new ones by unchecking the bookmark icon next to the dish in the “my dishes” list. You can upgrade to our premium version if you wish to save an unlimited number of dishes.

How do I undo a swipe?

Accidentally swipe that chicken marsala to the right? No worries, just go into your swiped dishes, find the unwanted dish on the list, and drag your finger to the left. Click on the trash icon that appears to remove that dish for good.

Can I use filters to narrow down my search criteria?

Yes, you can update your filters by clicking on the filter icon at the upper left of the swipe screen. Here you have the ability to only show restaurants that are currently open, change your search distance, and filter by cuisine type. You can also access “cheat mode” on this page if you are a Premium member.

Can I save a dish that hasn’t been displayed in my swipe options?

Yes, you can search for a specific restaurant or dish by clicking on the search icon on the upper right of the swipe screen. Once you find the dish you are looking for, click “save dish” to add it to your saved dishes.

I saw a dish that really caught my eye, can I find other dishes from that restaurant?

Make sure to save that dish so you can reference it in your account anytime you are planning on eating out. You can also click on the restaurant profile and then click “view menu” to see all of the other dishes from that restaurant that fall within your diet criteria.

How do I change my location?

You can only swipe dishes where you are currently located. You can upgrade to our premium version for the ability to change your dishing location. If you are trying to plan ahead for a trip using the free version, click “map” at the top of the swipe page. Find your destination on the map and click “search here.” A variety of restaurants and dishes that fit your diet will appear that are located around your desired area.

How do I update my account information?

Click on your profile at the bottom right corner of the navigation bar. From there, click on “edit profile” at the top of the page to be taken to where you can update your information.

The app is not finding any dishes near me.

Make sure that HowUdish is allowed to access your location in your phone settings. You can also expand your filters by clicking on the filter icon in the upper left of the swipe screen to increase your search distance or expand your cuisine options.

Can I utilize the app without allowing it to use my location?

If you turn off your location the app won’t be able to find dishes near you but you can still use the community boards and search restaurant menus to find dishes that fall within your selected diet.

Why should I check-in on the app?

Checking in to a restaurant allows you to rate and review the dishes that you have ordered. This will help us present dishes that most closely match your diet.

I forgot to check-in when I went out to eat, can I still rate my dish?

Yes, you can check-in at a restaurant at any time. Make sure to only check-in at restaurants that you have visited. You will have the option to rate how well a dish matched your diet for dishes that you have saved at restaurants that you have checked-in at.

Can I rate a restaurant that I checked-in at?

When you click “community” on the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, you will be taken to the community boards where you will be given the option to check-in to a restaurant, share a restaurant or dish photo, or review a restaurant or dish. Let the HowUdish community know what you thought of your dining experience!

Can I find out the price of a dish on the app?

To find the most accurate price information for a dish, you can contact the restaurant directly by going to the restaurant’s profile page on the app and clicking “call” to call the restaurant. The profile page also provides access to the restaurant’s directions and hours. Clicking “more options” on the dish’s page will alert you as to whether there are any deals available.

Can I order a dish or make a reservation from the app?

To place an order or make a reservation, you can contact the restaurant directly by going to the restaurant’s profile page on the app and clicking “call” to call the restaurant. Alternatively, when you are on the dish’s page, some dishes have an ordering and/or reservation option when you click on “more options” at the bottom right corner.

 

Dish Lifestyle Goals

What dish styles do you support?

We currently have nine diets to choose from: low-calorie, low-carb, low-fat, balanced, high-protein, high-fiber, gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian. There is also a “foodie” option if you would like to explore all of the available dishes in your area.

I don’t follow a specific dish style but am looking to maintain a healthy diet, how can I fully utilize the app?

You are in the right place. This app was created for anyone looking to follow a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. Just choose 1-3 of the available diet selections that most closely match your current eating habits. You can always mix and match your diet selections until you find the combination that works best for you. A good place to start is with the “balanced” diet selection which contains the proper portion of protein, fat and carbohydrates and consists of various healthy food groups. Alternatively, choose the “foodie” option to explore all of the dishes in your area.

How do I change my dish style selections?

Just click on “profile” in the lower right corner of the app and then click on “edit profile” at the top. Scroll down and click edit in the “my dish styles” section. You can switch your diet selections at any time on this page.

Can I choose multiple diet goals?

As mentioned above, you may choose up to three special diets, or the “foodie” option. You can always change your diet goals until you find the best dishes for you. Keep in mind that the more diets you select, the fewer options you’ll have in terms of finding dishes.

Premium Version and Pro Dish Styles

What additional features are available with the Premium version?

The Premium version allows you unlimited swipes and saves, the ability to change your dishing location, cheat mode, the ability to undo accidental left swipes, and an ad-free app experience. You can also upgrade to Pro Dish Styles, where you can learn how your favorite competitive athlete eats at your local restaurants, as well as additional tips and tricks for eating like a pro.

Which athletes are currently involved in Pro Dish Styles?

As a Pro Dish Style member, you can choose an athlete to follow and learn the secrets of how they dish. The following athletes are currently sponsoring dishes on the app as of February 2019:

  • Jordan Burroughs: A wrestling champion who avoids red meat, sugar, and dairy, while maintaining high protein and energy levels.
  • Cat Zingano: A top MMA fighter who avoids gluten, soy, refined sugars, grains, and dairy, while maintaining an anti-inflammatory diet.
  • Brandon Marshall: A professional football player who avoids meats, refined sugars, and dairy, while sticking to an alkaline diet.
  • Bobby Portis: A professional basketball player who avoids fried foods and desserts, while focusing on foods high in carbohydrates and protein, but low in fat.
  • Dani Speegle: A competitive fitness athlete who avoids oils and refined sugar, while focusing on quality high-protein meals.
  • Queen Harrison: A professional track and field athlete who follows a balanced lifestyle that avoids pork and dairy.

How do I upgrade to the Premium version?

In the app, you can upgrade to the Premium version right from the profile page. You can sign up for the monthly subscription for $0.99/month, or save by signing up for the annual subscription for $9.99/year. Both memberships include a one-month free trial.

What is cheat mode?

Cheat mode is a Premium feature that allows you to expand your search to show you some of the least terrible options to cheat on your diet. Activate cheat mode by clicking on “filter” at the top left of the swipe screen and switching the “cheat mode” toggle button to the right.

How do I cancel my Premium subscription?

You can manage your subscription from your iPhone settings > iTunes & App Store > click on your Apple ID > View Apple ID > Subscriptions.

Will I lose any of my data if I cancel my Premium subscription?

You will lose all of your saved recipes if you downgrade to the free version, but you will not lose any of your swiped or saved dishes.

 

Data & Security

How can I access HowUdish?

The HowUdish iPhone app is currently available for download in the Apple App Store.

What types of restaurants do you have listed on the app?

We are trying to compose the most extensive restaurant list in your area. No restaurants are excluded.

How can I get my favorite restaurant or dish added to the app?

If you notice that we are missing your favorite restaurant or dish, click on the gear setting in the upper right of your profile page and click Contact Us. Let us know the restaurant and location so we can get it added for you.

Take pictures of the restaurant’s menu and send them to us to include those dishes in the future. Stay tuned as we streamline the ability to add a restaurant to the app in future updates.

Where do you have restaurants listed?

We currently have restaurants listed all across the United States. Make sure to bring us along when you travel to help stick to your goals. Stay in touch to hear updates about our international expansion.

Where do you find the nutritional information of these dishes?

We cross-reference a variety of sources to build our menu and nutritional database to provide you with the most accurate information available. Portion size, ingredients, and preparation methods may vary so make sure to check in with the restaurant to ensure that what you are ordering meets your dietary and any allergy restrictions. If you notice something that doesn’t seem right on the app, please let us know.

I noticed some information was inaccurate on the app.

We try to keep all of our restaurant, menu and nutritional data as up-to-date as possible. If you notice anything that doesn’t look right, please click on the “report dish” and/or “report restaurant” buttons so we can continue to improve the accuracy of our data. We wouldn’t be able to do it without your feedback!

Do I have to create an account?

Yes, you need to create an account to access the app so we can customize and track your diet and dishes specifically for you. You can either log in with your email address or with your Facebook account.

If I log in with Facebook, will you post on my Facebook page?

We will absolutely not post on your behalf. Logging in with Facebook is just an easier way to pull in all of your personal data. We are excited when you reach your goal but will leave that to your discretion to post to your friends.
